Luke Berry has ominous message for Charlton’s Athletic’s League One promotion rivals

Luke Berry, Charlton Athletic’s matchwinner, has an unsettling message for the rest of League One’s promotion contenders: We’re only going to get better.

The summer signing, who is now a free agent after leaving Luton Town, scored in stoppage time against Leyton Orient on Saturday.

The Addicks have won both of their league games this season by a single goal and kept two clean sheets.

When asked about his first goal for Charlton, Berry said: “The way it happened was brilliant – a last-minute winner.” You can’t write it any better in front of your home supporters. It was a great feeling. I did the tunnel jump and feared I’d cramp up. It’s unique, and I’ve never done it before.

It’s cool and something to look forward to when things are going well.

“It’s definitely the most natural thing I do (arriving in the box and taking chances). It’s not something I really work on. It’s simply sniffing around the front two, looking for a little second ball, and getting the shot off.I could have done a couple things better versus Birmingham the other day. Fortunately, I took one today. There were a few in the first half, including a left-foot volley that was blocked. You could tell it was coming.

“Hopefully, I can demonstrate and teach the younger kids that it’s not all about flicks and tricks, but about grinding out victories. Today was sort of like

That includes the Wigan game.

“We didn’t act hastily. We still put it out there and tried to be ourselves. It was a terrific learning curve for us to realise that if we keep doing our jobs and being focused, we will eventually get a chance or they will fail. The major thing we’ve been focussing on is acquiring clean sheets. I wasn’t here last season, but the manager drilled it into us that you don’t get promoted unless you keep clean sheets.

“We need to keep performing the basics and learning. There will be mistakes we made today. It’s all about learning and growing as the season progresses; we’ll get even better.
