How would things have been different if John Tavares had signed with the Bruins instead of the Maple Leafs in 2018?

John Tavares, who is about to enter the last year of his overpriced contract in Toronto, is no longer captain of the Maple Leafs. His legacy may ultimately be characterised as that of a young person who came home, tried his hardest, performed with sincerity and honour, and then did the right thing by giving Auston Matthews the “C” recently.

Not quite the winning march that Tavares and the Leafs had in mind when he inked his massive seven-year/$77 million contract in July 2018.

In the meanwhile, Bruins supporters must speculate about how history may have turned out for the Black and Gold as well as Tavares, who signed with Boston rather than Toronto that summer after discussions with the team.

The 27-year-old Islander was really interested in joining the Bruins. But there was never any doubt where the solid pivot would play out his peak seasons until the money went outrageous, and it looks even more ridiculous now.
