Four-star Matthew Able finally made his collegiate decision and he will not be attending Virginia Tech, as he chose the Hurricanes over the Hokies.

Able praised Miami and said, “What really stood out is that it’s close to home and that’s cool but it’s not something I am super stressed about,” so it seemed like the right decision. I believe that after talking to me extensively, coaches [Bill] Courtney and Jim Larranaga saw me as a lead guard. I think enrolling in the ACC is a fantastic opportunity, provided I fulfil the necessary requirements.”
Virginia Tech, Miami, Wake Forest, Northwestern, Baylor, Boston College, Michigan, Xavier, Brown, Dartmouth, Florida Gulf Coast, Georgia, Georgia State, Jacksonville, Minnesota, New Mexico State, St. John’s, and Stetson are among the universities that have extended offers to Able, according to 247Sports.
He recently made his pledge today after whittening down his list of potential colleges. Baylor, Boston College, Miami, Michigan, Northwestern, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, and Xavier are among the universities on his final list.
Able rejected Mike Young and Virginia Tech in favour of the Miami Hurricanes. Being a standout player in his recruitment class, Able would have been a tremendous asset to this class.
Able has been playing for Austin Rivers SE Elite this summer and has shown himself to be among the best in the 2025 recruitment class. Against Southern Assault, the home team of four-star Caleb Steger—who also has an offer from Virginia Tech—Able scored 35 points and pulled down seven rebounds.
Able is a determined scorer who always looks for the shot. He exudes confidence on the court and never hesitates to make shots, especially when it matters most. In every aspect of the game, Able is a very physical player who is equally competitive when playing defence. His offensive relentlessness and high motor are the highlights of his incredibly well-balanced game. An excellent athlete who would be a valuable addition to the recruiting class of 2025, he has the potential to be the top scorer in the country when playing NCAA basketball.

“With his broad shoulders and powerful frame, Able is a well-built wing that will only continue to fill out. For someone who makes threes frequently, his mechanics are a little unconventional. He only hops slightly into a noticeable twisting motion, yet his release is fluid and the ball is soft. Although his jump shot appeared to be the foundation of his assault, he demonstrated his versatility by being able to make mid-range jump jumpers off dribbles and display strong athleticism in open play. Able’s deft left hand was another really notable feature. Not only did he place the ball on the floor to all sides, but he also felt at ease enough to use both hands to dunk with it. Moreover, he had excellent perimeter footwork off the catch and
was an aggressive defenseman.”
With Christian Gurdak and Sincere Jones leading the way, Virginia Tech’s recruiting class continues to rank 24th in the nation. The Hokies might add some significant players to their class since they still have a lot of high targets available.
