JUST IN : Texas Longhorns achieve highest AP Poll ranking in 15 years

Texas stood above the rest of the Lone Star State with a statement win on the road in Ann Arbor, while Texas A&M regained confidence with an easy win at home.

As for Big 12 teams like University of Houston, Baylor, Texas Tech — yikes. TCU was the only team in the conference from the state of Texas that won a game… against the Sharks from Long Island.

Both UTSA and Rice won this week, while the Sam Houston State Bearkats endured a beatdown in Orlando.

Here’s what we learned about Texas teams after Week 2.

No. 2 Texas (2-0)

Texas A&M (1-1)

The Aggies blew past the alma mater of their famed former head coach, R.C. Slocum, on Saturday with a 52-10 victory over McNeese State. What stood out was the ground game, where the Aggies deployed six different ball carriers for 333 rushing yards. Texas A&M’s four rushing touchdowns was its most since recording four in a 52-3 win over Prairie View in 2021, while the team’s 333 total rushing yards was its most since running for 503 yards in a 80-59 victory over Northwestern State in 2018.

On the flip side, the Notre Dame loss just got worse, as the Fighting Irish were defeated by Northern Illinois, 16-14 at home this weekend. Notre Dame dropped 13 spots to No. 18, while NIU entered the top 25 at No. 25. The Aggies received 68 points in AP Poll voting, which was third behind Illinois and Boise State.

  • Next game: at Florida, 2:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 14 ABC

TCU (2-0)

The Horned Frogs handled the Long Island University Sharks, 45-0 on Saturday. It should be noted that the Long Island Sharks have only had a Division I FCS football team since 2019, when it unified its Post and Brooklyn campuses. The 127 yards of total offense by the Sharks were the fewest allowed by TCU since 2012, when it held Grambling State to 80 yards in a 56-0 victory.

  • Next game: vs. UCF, 6:30 p.m., FOX

Texas State (2-0)

Sincere apologies for leaving out Texas State in last week’s recap, but the Bobcats are now 2-0 after defeating the UTSA roadrunners 49-10 in the I-35 rivalry. It marks the first time the Bobcats have begun the season 2-0 since 2013. Bobcats quarterback Jordan McCloud is a transfer from James Madison, where he was named the Sunbelt Player of the Year, and has been named to multiple quarterback award watchlists this season. McCloud completed 18 of 27 passes for 309 yards and two touchdowns.

  • Next game: vs. Arizona State, 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 12, ESPN
  • Houston (0-2)

Unfortunately, the Cougars wait another week for a chance to capture their first win under new head coach Willie Fritz, and begin the season 0-2 for the first time since 2012. Houston gave No. 15 Oklahoma a scare in Saturday’s 16-12 loss. Defensive back Jeremiah Wilson caught Oklahoma quarterback Jackson Arnold’s first interception of the season, but ultimately, offensive struggles doomed the Cougars in the second half and the Sooners fended off any chance of a comeback with a safety in the fourth quarter.

    • Next game: vs. Rice, 7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 14, ESPN+
    • Rice (1-1)

The Owls captured their first win of the season over Texas Southern on Saturday, 69-7. Their 69 points was the third-most in school history and the most since scoring 77 against North Texas on Sept. 27, 2008. Senior Dean Conners ran for 113 yards and three touchdowns, which allowed him to eclipse the career 1,000-yard rushing mark with 1,064.

      • Next game: at Houston, 7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 14, ESPN+

      Baylor (1-1)

The Bears lost 23-12 to No. 12 Utah on the road in their first Big 12 matchup of the season. It seems fitting to highlight the punter, Palmer Williams, who had a career-long punt of 79 yards this weekend. His 62.7-yard average on his six punts in the contest is a school record for yards per punt in a single-game.

      • Next game: vs. Air Force Academy, 6:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 14, FS1
      • Texas Tech (1-1)

Maybe we should’ve seen this coming after the Red Raiders barely snuck by Abilene Christian last week, but Washington State handed Texas Tech a 37-16 loss on the west coast this weekend. It doesn’t help that ahead of the game, Texas Tech announced it had lost a second veteran linebacker to a season- ending injury: Joseph Adedire. The first was Dylan Spencer.

        • Next game: vs. North Texas, 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 14, FS1

        Sam Houston (1-1)

The Bearkats lost to UCF, 45-14, on the road in Orlando, giving up more than 550 yards of offense.

        • vs. Hawaii, 6 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 14, ESPN+
