Adeola Ogunmola Sowemimo, a 31-year-old Nigerian pilot, has become the first woman to fly the Boeing 787 Dreamliner for Qatar Airways. “I am thrilled to be a part of this milestone,” Sowemimo remarked. “It is the Lord’s doing, and it’s marvelous in my sight.”
Sowemimo’s achievement is a significant milestone in the aviation profession, where women have long been underrepresented. “Women drive double-decker London buses.” Women drive BRT buses in Lagos. So, why not fly a plane?” she said.
Former World Bank Vice-President Arunma Oteh praised Sowemimo on her success, tweeting, “Congratulations Captain Adeola Ogunmola Sowemimo, you are making Nigeria proud.”
Sowemimo’s road to become a pilot began at the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology in Zaria, Kaduna, where she completed her standard aviation degree. She then went to Sunrise Aviation Inc. in Florida, USA, to finish her standard pilot course.
“It’s a dream come true,” Sowemimo explained. “I am proud to be an inspiration to African women and girls who want to pursue a career in aviation.” Her accomplishment exemplifies her dedication and perseverance. “If women work hard, they are capable of achieving incredible feats and would be recognized for their hard work and determination,” according to her.
