Sunderland have had a very productive start to their Championship campaign.
Regis Le Bris’ side has won four of their first five games and is in second position, one point behind league leaders West Bromwich Albion.
A play-off finish would have been considered a success before the season began, but there is now genuine hope that automatic promotion will be accomplished.
Sunderland could benefit from signing a former Liverpool Champions League winner in January.
Sunderland should look to recruit Naby Keita in January.
Sunderland were in talks to recruit Werder Bremen midfielder Naby Keita earlier this month, but no agreement could be reached, according to Ed Aarons.
Keita was clearly considering a move to Sunderland, therefore the Black Cats should revive their interest in Janaury and try again to clinch the deal.
If he signs, the rest of the Championship will be on high alert, potentially leading to automatic promotion.
Keita won the Champions League with Liverpool, so having that experience in the locker room would be helpful to Le Bris’ team.
Furthermore, if he remains fit, the 29-year-old may immediately become the best midfielder in the Championship.
Naby Keita’s injury record
Keita’s injury history might be cause for concern.
The Guinea international made only one start last season, after five the year before, so Sunderland should take that into account before making an offer.
Keita has been frozen out at Werder Bremen, therefore he may be available for a reduced sum, with all sides eager to arrange a deal.
