Oak Cliff is celebrating 10 years of service to the community. Just one day before North Texas Giving Day, a Dallas nonprofit striving to alter the narrative in their community got a significant donation from the Dallas Mavericks and the NBA’s new owner, Sands Corp.
For Oak Cliff, which began ten years ago, is still expanding as it works in South Oak Cliff “to liberate the community from systemic oppression, create a culture of education, and increase social mobility and social capital.”
Taylor Toynes, co-founder and CEO, invited Cynt Marshall, CEO of the Dallas Mavericks, and Patrick Dumont, Mavericks governor and Las Vegas Sands COO, to the community center.
Following a tour of the facilities with the For Oak Cliff board, they all walked downstairs.
The facility, which had been refurbished because to Mavericks donations, was set for a surprise. Marshall presented Toynes with two $50,000 checks, one from the Mavs and the other from Sands Corporation. The Mavs’ CEO stated that she intended to surprise For Oak Cliff when the group presented her with a painting of herself in the gym with a quotation.
“This is an excellent curriculum. I would encourage everyone to look at it and give in any way they can, whether with time or dollars, to help progress what’s going on here,” said Dumont, whose family purchased a majority ownership in the Mavericks last year.
Toynes acknowledged his appreciation with a big “Thanks!” He stated that the funds will support their programs for
students. “Every child that comes into our building is going to get academic enrichment every day; they’ll have a 45-minute academic enrichment session with our partner Beacon Hill, amongst other things, with the software we have on our computers,” Toynes told the newsroom.
The co-founder of For Oak Cliff informed the audience that this is a significant milestone for them and hopes to inspire others.
“We’re celebrating 10 years of service and resilience, serving thousands of people annually and continuing to keep hope at the forefront of all the things that we do, and we hope that everyone who came in this building leaves inspired and encouraged to go out and serve too,” says Toynes.
