JUST IN : Matthew Tkachuk delivers heartbreaking comments on Johnny Gaudreau’s passing

Back on August 29, Sean Higgins, who was allegedly driving under the influence, was involved in a horrific accident that claimed the lives of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau.

Many NHL players have paid respect to the two brothers since the news of their deaths broke. We wish it hadn’t been required, but it’s been amazing to watch. That being said, a number of players are appearing before the media for the first time since the event as training camp gets underway this week. Because of this, the athletes who knew the men the best are now giving us their honest and unvarnished opinions.

For example, during his Florida Panthers press conference, Matthew Tkachuk, Gaudreau’s former teammate in Calgary, said some really painful things. Tkachuk valued Johnny highly, as you will hear.

But despite all the wonderful things that have occurred this summer, they are nearly eclipsed by what has transpired. It has been a horrible couple of weeks. Actually has. It’s the most depressing thing you’ve ever heard or seen. Being able to attend the service only makes you feel incredibly sad. One of my favorite players I’ve ever played with is Johnny. What a wonderful buddy he is.

“I shall always cherish the memories I have of him. His parents, Meredith, and the children are all on my mind all the time. That week was really difficult, as was the funeral. He will be with us forever… His legacy will endure eternally. My memories of him will never fade.”

It was obvious that Gaudreau and Tkachuk were in love.
