The Detroit Red Wings left it late but still managed to lock their top defenseman, Moritz Seider, to a new contract.
Seider, who was a restricted free agent, agreed to a seven-year contract that comes with $8.55 million annual salary and a total value of $59.85 million. He is now the player with the second largest cap hit on the Red Wings’ roster after All-Star Dylan Larkin, who earns $8.7 million annually.
The reason why the Red Wings didn’t finish Seider’s contract earlier was reportedly their tight cap situation. The team had just $8.7 million at their disposal and probably had to do some convincing to get Seider to sign at a number that falls below that.
Seider was away from the team while waiting for his contract to be resolved and missed the start of training camp. However, as soon as the paperwork was finished, the 2022 Calder Memorial Trophy winner joined his teammates on ice.
Moritz Seider made his debut in the NHL in 2021–22 and hasn’t missed a single game in these past three seasons. He contributed with 21 goals and 113 assists in that period, including a career-high nine goals and a total of 42 points last season.
