JUST IN : Frenchman says he had panic when signing for Barcelona – Tried to join Fulham instead

After playing for teams like Barcelona, Marseille, and AS Monaco, Philippe Christanval ended his career with a stint of less than 40 games during his three seasons at Fulham. Chris Coleman made bold predictions about Christanval’s potential as a long-term Fulham captain during this transfer, but it wasn’t the most impressive of stints. The Frenchman retired at the age of thirty, and he talked about his career choices and his time at the four clubs in an interview with Ouest France. Christanval is currently working in real estate.

Just before signing, I experienced a major heat flush. I had contacted Jean Tigana, who was coaching Fulham and giving me advice at the time.I asked him if it wouldn’t be better for me to go to Fulham since I was worried that I wouldn’t have what it takes for Barça.

“He informed me that Barcelona was the right place for me to advance in my career and that it wasn’t financially feasible.”

The former defender also discussed his decision to hang up his boots early during his time at Craven Cottage.

“I was physically and mentally exhausted, with knee problems,” he stated. And I was tired when I got to Clairefontaine at twelve; it had been over twenty years.

Perhaps an earlier move to Fulham rather than Barcelona would have seen things work out differently.

He might have played much more regularly than he did for Barcelona, where he spent two seasons and never really made a mark. It could have perhaps helped him fulfil the promise that he once had at Monaco.
