Former Chelsea and England defender John Terry lauded Newcastle United after their historic 4-1 Champions League win over Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night. Miguel Almiron, Dan Burn, Sean Longstaff, and Fabian Schar put PSG to the sword in Newcastle’s first Champions League group stage match at St James’ Park in over two decades.
The Magpies topped Group f, called “the group of death,” after two matches, causing the rest of Europe to sit up and take note.
And Terry, who won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2012, praised Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe and his team in a series of tweets.
Despite having only 26% possession, Newcastle was able to limit PSG to only two shots on target.
“Just re-watched the Newcastle game from last night, it was so refreshing watching them play, tactically excellent,” Terry said the next day. “The players’ and fans’ passion is superb and exciting to watch. Instead of making 100 passes and going nowhere, Newcastle plays with a purpose.” Eddie Howe [emoji clap].
Newcastle has spent nearly £400 million on new players since being taken over little under two years ago. While three of their four scores on Wednesday were with the club before to the takeover, players signed in the last 24 months, such as Kieran Trippier, Bruno Guimaraes, and, of course, Dan Burn, were vital in the victory.
