David Moyes is expected to take over from Gary O’Neil if the Wolves manager loses his job amid mounting pressure at Molineux.
This is according to Mick Brown, who worked closely with Moyes at West Ham and departed with him in June, and who exclusively told Football Insider that the Wolves position “would interest him” if it became available. O’Neil’s side is now winless in nine Premier League games, with only two points, putting them in 19th place.
After rallying from 2-0 down to tie 2-2 late on against Brighton, the results have been worse than their performances would imply, but concerns remain.
Wolves have conceded two or more goals in seven consecutive games in all competitions, totaling 25 goals in nine league games thus far.
Brown feels that the team’s biggest weakness this season has been a lack of defensive solidity, which Moyes can address. The former West Ham manager had become known for his pragmatic philosophy, which centered on keeping a strong defense and supplementing it with more dynamic offensive players. This has been said to suit the Wolves’ circumstances considering the degree of quality in their roster.
David Moyes ‘interested’ in Wolves job amid Gary O’Neill pressure. Moyes led West Ham from relegation to European triumph during his five-year tenure.
Brown, who remains well-connected in the game, has stated that he should be in position to take over at Wolves if they fire O’Neil following a dismal run of performances.
“Wolves is one I think would be interesting to him,” he told Football Insider.
“They have a lot of ability, but they aren’t getting results, therefore the manager will eventually be questioned.
“Moysey is who he is, and everyone knows it; he is an honest and genuine football player.
“He may have ideas about the types of teams he’d like to manage, but it rarely happens that way.
“You obtain a job, wherever it is, because they are having difficulties.
“His record is there for all to see, and if you’re toward the bottom of the standings, the first step is to stop losing games, which is what he provides.
“The Wolves aren’t bad players; they’re just bad defenders. They allow too many goals.
“That’s why I wouldn’t be surprised if they go with Moyes. He can help with it.
“When you’re in the position they’re in, without a win in nine games, you can’t afford to have all these airs and graces about playing pretty football.”
