Charlton Athletic must make important decisions about the futures of six players who will be out of contract at the end of the season.
The Addicks are currently in mid-table in League One, but with only four points separating them from the top six, it is too early to say whether they will mount a promotion push for the rest of the season, which could influence the decision-making process when it comes to renewing expiring contracts.
On-loan Luton Town midfielder Allan Campbell is poised to leave at the end of his temporary tenure in SE7, while Dan Potts’ short-term contract is expected to expire at the end of 2024, leaving six permanently contracted players who will be out of contract next year.
Nothing changes. Let’s look at which Charlton players will be out of contract in the summer of 2025, as well as the decisions that the club must make.
Chuks, Aneke
Chuks Aneke, a physical centre-forward, has been troubled by injuries for much of his time at The Valley, although he was frequently fit enough to serve as a highly successful super-sub during Nathan Jones’ stint.
However, at the age of 31, and with his injury history, there is no certainty he will be awarded a new contract before his current one expires next year.
The ex-Arsenal player is, however, a good impact player at times – whether that is enough for Nathan Jones to want to keep him around for
is another matter.
Lloyd Jones Vice-captain Lloyd Jones has been impressive at the heart of Charlton’s defence this season, and his recent absence due to injury has hampered the Addicks during a difficult run of League One games.
In an interview with London News Online, the former Liverpool youth expressed his desire to sign a new deal.
“Hopefully, if I continue to perform well and focus on my game, I will be offered a new contract. “I’ll have to wait and see,” said the centre defender.
Thierry Small
Left-back Thierry Small has played second fiddle to Josh Edwards for the majority of the 2024/25 season, but he did assist in Charlton’s Bristol Street Motors Trophy triumph over Chelsea Under-21s on Tuesday.
The 20-year-old was given a new ‘long-term’ contract earlier this year, but it’s unclear whether he’ll sign it before his current one expires next summer, and with his game time reducing compared to last season, he may not want to stay in south London.
Tennai Watson
Tennai Watson has provided backup for Kayne Ramsay for the bulk of this season, but after starting against Wrexham last weekend owing to Ramsay’s injury, he was pulled off after five minutes with his own knock.
He hopes to return to fitness as soon as possible and demonstrate that he merits a new contract before his current one expires at the end of the season.
Tayo Edun: Left-back. Tayo Edun is below both Small and Edwards in the pecking order, hence he has yet to make an appearance in League One this season.
It would not be surprising if the 26-year-old moved on in January, Even if that does not happen, he will most likely leave when his contract expires next summer, despite the fact that he has the option to extend his contract for another year.
