The Dallas Cowboys season is practically gone, since they have virtually little chance of making the playoffs. While they will have a lot of work to do to improve their season next year, they are making a significant adjustment at the running back position for the remainder of this season. They’re demoting Ezekiel Elliott, their once-great running back.
Dallas Cowboys’ New Starting Running Back
The Cowboys’ backfield has struggled all season, and they have one of the league’s weakest run offenses. According to Matt Hladik of The Spun, Dallas relied on Rico Dowdle and Ezekiel Elliott as their primary running backs this season and did not pursue Derrick Henry in free agency. Overall, Dowdle has been decent, if not remarkable, while Elliott has looked his age (29) and has irritated the squad with “habitual tardiness” and other problems.
So far, Dowdle has received more work than Elliott, but the Cowboys have maintained a back-by-committee strategy until today.
Head coach McCarthy told reporters Thursday that Dowdle will be the team’s lead back moving forward, beginning Monday against against Houston Texans.
“You definitely need to get him the ball. That is my primary emphasis in continuing to provide him with opportunities. “He’s the lead back,” McCarthy stated, according to Clarence Hill Jr. of All Dlls.
Dowdle has been the better of the two backs, though not by much. He has featured in eight Cowboys games, starting seven of them. He has 374 yards on 83 carries, 24 receptions for 166 yards and three touchdowns. He still hasn’t received a rushing score.
Elliott, on the other side, has been playing quite poorly. The club has been free-falling after a disappointing start, with a 3-6 record that is only going to get worse. They are on track for their first losing season since 2020, and only the second in the previous 14 years!With Dak out for the season, they are largely focused on next year, and Micah Parsons has already begun discussing what the squad can do to improve things for next year.

McCarthy is expected to leave before the end of the year, but Jerry Jones has stated that McCarthy will remain the coach indefinitely.
Cowboys fans believe that this move took far too long to happen, and that it is now far too late, as their season is almost over:
