The Arizona Diamondbacks came very close to returning to the postseason and defending their National League pennant in 2023. Despite improving their record by five wins throughout the regular season, they came up just short on the last day.
They’ll need to make a few changes if they want to return to the playoffs in 2025, and their starting lineup may use some improvement.
To remedy the rotation, they might reunite with someone who made their debut with the squad in 2008. Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer expects that Max Scherzer will sign a one-year, $15 million contract.
“Scherzer’s body simply didn’t cooperate this year. “He started late due to back surgery, and he was then sidetracked by various ailments before finally shutting it down early in September,” Rymer said.
“Even before then, the future Hall of Famer had made it apparent he wasn’t done. He’s worth taking a chance on just because of who he is, and there’s also the possibility that he’ll rebound after an offseason in which he will not be recovering from surgery.”
Scherzer spent the first two seasons of his career with Arizona before being moved to the Detroit Tigers. He has since established an exceptional career.
During the regular season, the 40-year-old right-hander made only nine starts.
The Texas Rangers. He went 2-4 in five starts, with a 3.95 ERA. If he can regain his health, he has the potential to be one of the game’s best pitchers, but much depends on whether or not he can maintain it.
Still, Arizona might take a chance on him by offering him a one-year “prove it” contract, especially if Jordan Montgomery is traded this winter.
It’ll be intriguing to see if Scherzer can find another landing point this winter.
