Southampton head coach Russell Martin has reassured fans that Super Eagles attacker Paul Onuachu’s injury in Sunday’s 3-2 loss to Liverpool may not be as bad as first thought.
Onuachu received his first Premier League start of the season in the match at St. Mary’s Stadium, giving the Nigerian striker a chance to prove himself.
Unfortunately, his performance was cut short in the second half when he fell down holding his knee, sparking concerns of an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.
Prior to his substitution, Onuachu performed admirably. In the first half, he had more dribbles than the entire Liverpool team, demonstrating his technical abilities.
He also contributed defensively, helping to withstand Liverpool’s constant siege.
Despite his early exit, Southampton manager Russell Martin praised the striker’s performance and speculated that exhaustion, rather than a serious injury, could have been the problem. He was quite good, so I hope his injury is not too terrible. It’s just weariness, but I felt he performed quite well,” Martin stated after the game.
Onuachu’s impressive performance in his debut start could pave the way for additional opportunities as Southampton aim to climb the Premier League table.
Fans will hope for a speedy recovery as the Nigerian
Striker continues to compete for a consistent role in the team.
