If Shane Bieber does not return to the Cleveland Guardians, what other teams should consider the Cy Young winner? Shane Bieber was chosen by Cleveland in 2016 and has spent the past five seasons in the rotation. During that span, he established himself as one of baseball’s finest starting pitchers, winning the 2020 Cy Young Award.
However, the Guardians are in danger of losing their star player, who is entering unrestricted free agency for the first time in his career.
If Bieber does not return to Cleveland for the 2025 season, where could he end up?
The Athletic’s Tim Britton, Chad Jenning, and Aaron Gleeman prepared a list of the top free agents, as well as potential landing destinations. They list the St. Louis Cardinals, the Texas Rangers, and the Guardians as the greatest fits for Bieber’s talents. This comes after Robert Murray of Fansided claimed in mid-November that the Boston Red Sox and Bieber’s representatives had spoken. Murray also noticed that Bieber appears to have a large market. Hopefully, Bieber will return to the Guardians on a short-term deal that benefits both him and the organization. Cleveland sorely needs more starting pitchers, and Bieber has one of the greatest arms in the market.
If he does not return to the Guardians, the Rangers, Cardinals, and Red Sox are all viable options as landing locations. Each franchise is seeking for a front-end starter to supplement their already strong rotation.
Whether Bieber joins with St. Louis, Texas, Cleveland, Boston, or another franchise for the 2025 season, he will most certainly miss Opening Day as he recovers from surgery.
This health concern could play a significant role in determining which team Bieber signs with.
