The Reds are hoping to improve in 2025 after going 77-85 and finishing fourth in the National League Central Division in 2024. It’s only December, but Reds fans are losing patience as the team has failed to add any attacking aid this offseason after suffering offensively in 2024.
Reds President of Baseball Operations Nick Krall joined Tommy Thrall and Mark Sheldon on the Reds Hot Stove on Wednesday night to discuss the offseason. “We feel really good about where our pitching staff is,” Krall told me. “I believe you can always do more pitching. You can always improve.
Krall stated that they have had numerous conversations with organizations to try to improve their lineup.
“We have had a lot of conversations over the last few weeks just to try and bolster our position player group,” Krall told reporters. “Right now, we haven’t received anything and haven’t made any progress, but we’ve had a lot of conversations and know what the landscape looks like. It’s simply figuring out how to strike a deal, whether it’s with a free agent or a trade, that will benefit this team.” Krall went on to remark that the most challenging part of making a deal right now is that so many teams are seeking for Major League help.
“In the trade market, several teams are looking for Major League pieces for Major League pieces.
“Back,” Krall said. “When you’re doing that, I can make a trade and fill a hole, but when I fill a hole, I open up another one.”
Reading between the lines, it appears like one of the reasons the Reds have been linked to so many arms this offseason is that if they move a pitcher, they will be able to replace that spot. Tommy Thrall inquired with Krall about the possibility of trading one of the pitchers.
“You’ve got eight guys in Ashcraft, Lowder, Lodolo, Abbott, Greene, Singer, Martinez, and Carson Spiers who have all made starts,” Krall told reporters. “Look at Spiers, Ashcraft, Lodolo, Greene, and Abbott.” They all missed time due to injuries. You know you will need more than five. If you
To go through the season with five starters, you’re really fortunate…When you look at that depth, is it depth or do you need all of these individuals to get through a season?”
Krall was asked if they were looking for any specific outfielders. “Yeah, they have to fit in the budget first, right,” replied Krall. “Are you looking for a one-year contract?” Are you looking for several years? Are you totally out of our budget right now? The trade market is simply seeking to match up players.”
Krall and the front office appear to be working on something, but Reds fans will have to wait for the time being.
