The NBA is once again attempting to make the All-Star Game competitive. The Cleveland Cavaliers will have at least one representative at the NBA All-Star Game, Donovan Mitchell. They might have as many as three, including head coach Kenny Atkinson, if the Cavs continue in first place in the conference. For the third time in as many years, these delegates will compete in a different format.
The All-Star selection process will stay unchanged. There will be 24 representatives, 12 from each conference. Fans, NBA players, and media members will vote on the starting lineups. The reserves will be selected by NBA head coaches.
The game format will be different.
Four teams will compete in a mini-tournament. Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal, and Kenny Smith will select three eight-man All-Star teams. The fourth team will win the Rising Stars game.
The teams will play three combined games, with a target score of 40 in each. The victors of the first two games will compete in a final game to decide the winner.
The winning team will receive $1.8 million. Each player on the second-place squad will receive $50,000. The third and fourth-place teams will receive $25,000 per participant. The All-Star Game has been abysmal for nearly a decade. The last two seasons, however, have brought it to new lows. Effort has been a problem in various games, but the concerns are also related to how the game has evolved. A pumped-up rendition of a spaced-out three-point shot isn’t nearly as entertaining as an exaggerated depiction of how the game was played in the 1990s or early 2000s.
