Sam Parkin has urged Charlton Athletic to continue with Nathan Jones and back him in January, despite their disappointing start to the League One season.
The Addicks had hoped to challenge for promotion to the Championship this season, but after 19 games, they are out of contention for a top-six spot.
The London club is in their fifth year in a row in the third level and has gone winless in their last three games.
This has called into doubt Jones’ efforts, considering he has previously had success at this level with Luton Town.
Parkin has emphasized the team’s dismal goal-scoring record as a crucial concern that Charlton must address.
However, he believes that working on the squad is more important than changing the dugout at this point.
“It is really difficult to put your finger on it,” Parkin explained on the What the EFL?! podcast.
“I don’t think much has changed since we last spoke about it.
“There is an obvious lack of goal threat and creativity.
“Only five teams scored less.
“I’ve looked at the last several games where they haven’t scored. They haven’t scored in the last three.
“They’ve had two goal-laden games in the cup, but it gets pushed to the sidelines when you’re not doing it in the league, especially in front of your own supporters.
“But yeah, only three shots on goal in the last two games, and [Miles] Leaburn, who came off the bench the other day, missed a number of really good chances to beat Mansfield.
“One v one, one header, and this applies to everyone; it is a team effort.
“It’s also the midfield, which, as they keep saying, lacks finesse and guile.
“So, the squad still requires surgery.
“But I’m where I was a while ago, I think.”
Above any other team at that level, we need to see Nathan Jones through, stick with him in January, and then review in the summer.” Charlton are now 14th in League One before of their match against Northampton Town on December 21, seven points behind sixth-place Reading. Time for management stability at Charlton.
Charlton have gone through several coaches in pursuit of the secret formula that will get them promoted to the Championship.
But it’s time to bring some stability to the club by sticking with Jones through this challenging season.
He has a solid CV at this level, a proven track record, and understands what it takes to fight in the second tier.
I agree.
The squad’s flaws must be addressed, as their dismal goal record will continue to keep them back until they find someone capable of consistently finding the net.
