Just before last weekend’s College Football Playoff games began, ESPN reported that Georgia quarterback Carson Beck was unlikely to return for the team’s game against Notre Dame.
According to the source, Beck was considering surgery and had not worked with the Bulldogs since injuring his throwing arm in the SEC title game versus Texas.
Fast forward a few days, and Georgia has made its final decision on quarterback Carson Beck.
The Bulldogs confirmed in an official statement to media that Beck underwent surgery on Monday and will miss the College Football Playoff.
“Carson Beck had successful surgery on his right elbow to repair his ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) on Monday in Los Angeles, California, done by renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache. “A full recovery is expected, with throwing beginning in the spring of 2025,” Radi Nabulsi said, citing a Georgia report. Last week, ESPN’s Mike Greenberg asked Paul Finebaum if losing Carson Beck for the season spelled the end of Georgia’s championship ambitions. “It does not; they have been preparing for this since the SEC Championship Game ended. They knew Gunner Stockton would be their quarterback for the Sugar Bowl in two weeks. “I believe they’re fine, Greeny,” Finebaum said of the Bulldogs. After coming off the bench in the SEC title game, Stockton led the Bulldogs to an overtime victory, completing 12-of-16 passes for 71 yards and one interception. Just last week, head coach Kirby Smart made it obvious that Stockton must be prepared to play.
“I think his strengths are somewhat different than Carson’s, obviously,” he told me. “But we already knew that. We never go into a game without having a strategy in place for Gunner if he has to play. I mean, if he’s your backup quarterback, he needs to be prepared to play.” Georgia and Notre Dame begin play on New Year’s Day.
