The Toronto Maple Leafs will be trying to bolster their forward group before the deadline, and a trade proposal has them re-acquiring one.
PuckPedia’s PuckGM tool allows users to make their own transactions. One user requested that the Maple Leafs acquire Jared McCann from the Seattle Kraken.
Maple Leafs get Jared McCann.
Kraken acquires:
Easton Cowan
Nick Robertson, a 2026 first-round pick.
The proposed trade would fill Toronto’s third-line center position, while Seattle receives a top prospect, an NHL player, and a first-round pick.
McCann is in the third year of a five-year, $25 million contract. The forward might provide some much-needed secondary scoring on the roster. McCann was dealt to the Maple Leafs in July 2021, but he was selected by the Kraken in the expansion draft just two weeks after. This season, McCann has 13 goals and 20 assists for 33 points in 47 games.
Seattle’s main return from the Maple Leafs would be the first-round pick and Cowan. Cowan is Toronto’s best prospect and should make the NHL next season. He now plays for the London Knights in the OHL, where he has 14 goals, 16 assists, and 31 points in 23 games.
Robertson, meanwhile, accepted a one-year contract to stay with the Maple Leafs this offseason after demanding a trade. In 39 games with Toronto this season, the forward has 8 goals and 4 assists for a total of 12 points.
Maple Leafs GM Plans to be Active Ahead of the Deadline.
Toronto is one of the NHL’s best clubs, and the Maple Leafs will be active before the deadline.
Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving addressed with the media, saying he wants to do everything he can to enhance the roster.
“You’re constantly watching. I know that a much is made of the deadline. But you’re constantly looking for methods to better your squad. “And it’s not always just external,” Treliving stated on January 13. “The one thing about injuries this year and the number of injuries we’ve had up front is that we’ve had an opportunity to evaluate ourselves internally, which is crucial. We’ve seen certain players step up and perform well, which gives you a sense of what you have within the organization.” Treliving, on the other hand, thinks that the decisions he takes are ultimately determined by the resources available.
“It’s not fantasy hockey; you have to see what’s available,” Treliving explained. “You must have those good young players on entry-level contracts and
Less money. These also assist you succeed. So it’s a balance, but we’ll continue to monitor the marketplace to see what’s there. Finally, determine the cost and check if there are any fits. Toronto currently leads the Atlantic Division with a 29-16-2 record.
John Tavares Deals With Injury
Toronto’s need for a forward grew after John Tavares suffered an injury.
According to DailyFaceoff’s Frank Seravalli, Tavares is anticipated to be out for three weeks due to his injury. “Obviously, an ugly-looking injury in practice but it sounds like the timeline for John Tavares is going to be somewhere in the two-to-three-week range,” Seravalli told ESPN’s Daily Faceoff Live. “He’s meant a lot to that team this season. He’s played his role nearly perfectly and, I believe, has created the stage for a healthy extension, if the Leafs can get around to it. Yes, a pay reduction, but it’s enough to keep him in the fold given how he’s played. It is untimely for them, but I was informed it will be two to three weeks.”
