Deshaun Watson broke his quiet after a setback in his return to the field, sending a clear statement about his mindset moving forward and his current predicament with the Cleveland Browns.
Watson ruptured his Achilles against the Cincinnati Bengals on October 20 and underwent his first surgery less than a week later. He suffered a setback in his recuperation, hurting his Achilles again and needing more surgery, putting his entire 2025 season in jeopardy.
“When Watson arrived at the CrossCountry Mortgage Campus earlier this week for his exit medical as part of the Browns’ season-ending process, he complained of stiffness from rolling his ankle in Miami. “MRI results revealed a re-rupture of his Achilles tendon,” the Browns said in a statement.
On January 10. “Dr. Bob Anderson, a foot and ankle specialist in Charlotte, North Carolina, conducted both procedures. Watson’s rehabilitation time and return to play status are uncertain, and he will most likely miss substantial time during the 2025 season. Many people believe Watson’s career is done in Cleveland. However, Watson is clearly not ready to retire just yet. His recent TikTok post conveys a strong message about his quest for respect. Watson is shown heading into a stadium on game day, clad in a suit. The image had no words, but the background music — a fragment from Gunna’s song “Got Damn” — contained lyrics that appear to tell volumes about his current mood.
“On and off the plane, (expletive). Uh, I
Don’t get any rest, (expletive). The lyrics mentioned in the post were “I want my respect, (expletive)”. The Browns’ trade for Deshaun Watson failed.
Watson has done little to earn respect throughout his tenure in Cleveland. The Browns acquired Watson in 2022 and signed him to a fully guaranteed contract worth $230 million through 2026.
However, Watson has only played in 19 games for Cleveland owing to injuries and a lengthy ban for off-field troubles. He will contribute approximately $73 million to the salary cap over the next two seasons.
The Browns are 9-10 with Watson as the starter, including a dreadful 1-6 this season. Watson has thrown 3,365 yards with 19 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
Watson’s difficulties were obvious this year before the Achilles injury, as the offense failed to score more than 20 points in any game. Watson also did not pass for more than 200 yards in any of his seven starts this season. Browns will consider all options to replace Deshaun Watson.
Before Watson’s injury, the Browns were already planning to replace him. After a 3-14 season, the team will be aggressive in its search for a solid starting quarterback this offseason.
Cleveland owns the second overall pick in the draft and could choose one of the top
Passers-by include Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward. The Browns might also look at free agency and trades, with Kirk Cousins and Aaron Rodgers considered as possible targets. Cleveland has some crucial pieces to be competitive, including Myles Garrett, Jerry Jeudy, Denzel Ward, and others. However, everyone in the building understands that the quarterback problem needs to be addressed.
“I believe we need a terrific quarterback. The NFL begins with the quarterback position. Ward recently told TMZ, “Once you have that, the rest of the team will follow.”
