Joe Gelhardt finds himself in a precarious situation at Leeds United, to the point where he may need to implore Daniel Farke to release him from his contract with the club come January. Gelhardt, once a rising star at Elland Road, has now faded into obscurity due to consistent exclusion from Farke’s plans, casting a dark shadow over his career prospects.
Currently, Farke is basking in the success of his attacking talents, including Joel Piroe, Georginio Rutter, Dan James, and Crycensio Summerville, all of whom have exceeded expectations as Leeds United currently occupies the 5th spot in the Championship.
In stark contrast, Gelhardt, who was once the talk of Elland Road, has now become an overlooked figure. He had a promising start to the season in the EFL Cup, scoring a solitary goal against Shrewsbury, but since then, his career trajectory has veered significantly off course.
Gelhardt made a name for himself with impressive performances at Wigan Athletic before joining Leeds United three years ago. The club showed faith in his potential by awarding him a five-year contract, lasting until 2027, and even sent him on loan to Sunderland in the hope of nurturing his talents. However, his return to Leeds led to continuous speculation about a permanent move to Sunderland or a potential move to Lecce, highlighting the belief in his untapped potential.
Despite all this, Gelhardt’s current situation at Elland Road is far from promising. It is unclear when he will be given a starting role, especially with Patrick Bamford’s return to fitness. Given the dwindling opportunities and the risk of further exclusion from Farke’s plans, Gelhardt may have no choice but to request a loan move in January to revive his career.
It is disheartening to witness a player of Gelhardt’s caliber experience such a rapid decline due to a lack of chances and a dent in his confidence.
