Bradford City recently underwent a significant change by parting ways with their manager, Mark Hughes, after his year-and-a-half tenure at Valley Parade. Unfortunately, Hughes couldn’t lead the Bantams through the League Two play-offs last season, and a poor start to the 2023-24 campaign cost him his job.
Whoever takes over as Hughes’ replacement at the West Yorkshire club will have to address some squad issues, mainly dealing with the excessive size of the squad. Only 18 players are allowed to be named in a matchday squad, and this overabundance may necessitate the loaning out of some current City players. Thus, when the January transfer window opens in 2024, we should consider three individuals who could benefit from a temporary departure.
1. Vadaine Oliver:
Vadaine Oliver, who scored 31 goals for Gillingham over two years, returned to Bradford in the summer of 2022 on a three-year deal. However, with Andy Cook already filling the role of a big target man, it was challenging to find room for both of them unless they played together. Unfortunately, Oliver’s opportunities were limited, with most of his 30 League Two appearances coming off the bench, resulting in just two goals. Injuries, including a knee operation and groin surgery, have further hindered his 2023-24 season. While he has returned to training, it’s uncertain if he will get much playing time, making a loan to another League Two club a potential option.
2. Harry Chapman:
Chapman, a talented League Two winger on his best days, has been plagued by persistent injury issues. He made 37 appearances for the Bant ams in his first year with the club but missed the play-off campaign due to hamstring surgery. As he continues his recovery, he is yet to feature in the current season. Additionally, the emergence of young talent Bobby Pointon in the wide positions may limit Chapman’s playing time upon his return. A loan to another League Two side could help him regain his form and potentially secure a new deal for the future.
3. Dylan Youmbi:
While Bobby Pointon has been making a name for himself at Bradford in League Two, another promising youngster, Dylan Youmbi, has struggled to find opportunities. Despite showing promise in pre-season, the 19-year-old forward has not been included in any League Two matchday squad or the EFL Trophy campaign. To gain valuable experience, Youmbi could benefit from a loan move to a non-league club, possibly before January, as transfer rules are more flexible outside the EFL. National League and National League North clubs should consider giving him a chance.
