Kevin Nolan has disclosed that he once approached his former manager at Newcastle, Alan Shearer, and encouraged him to come out of retirement because he believed Shearer was still in fantastic form. Shearer is renowned as one of the Premier League’s greatest strikers, boasting a remarkable all-time record of 260 goals.
Nolan joined Newcastle in January 2009, and Shearer assumed the managerial role in April. Even though Shearer had retired three years prior, he continued to actively participate in training sessions, leading Nolan to hope for his return to the field.
Shearer’s illustrious career included successful stints at Blackburn and his beloved Newcastle, where he briefly managed the team in 2009. Despite Shearer’s retirement, Nolan maintained that Shearer’s skill and physical condition were so exceptional that he suggested Shearer should consider playing again. According to Nolan, Shearer consistently demonstrated his goal-scoring prowess during training sessions.
When asked about the best manager he had encountered in training throughout his career on talkSPORT Drive, Nolan promptly singled out Shearer. He emphasized that Shearer’s abilities were still top-notch and that he could have made a significant impact on the team’s performance had he played
Nolan also expressed admiration for Shearer’s technique, power, and the way he struck the ball. He acknowledged that acquiring such skills would require substantial practice and dedication, but talent also played a significant role.
Shearer’s interim managerial tenure at Newcastle, however, was not as successful as his playing career. He won only one of his eight games in charge, and the team garnered just five points out of a possible 24, ultimately leading to their relegation to the Championship.
Nolan played in nearly all of the games during Shearer’s managerial stint before continuing to represent St. James’ Park for two more seasons.
