Southampton secured the signing of Ryan Manning during the summer, beating several other clubs to this free acquisition. However, the Republic of Ireland player has generated mixed opinions since joining the team.
Manning, 27, was one of Southampton’s early signings during the summer transfer window. He had departed Swansea City as a free agent at the end of the previous season. Reuniting with his former manager, Russell Martin, from his Swansea days, Manning has appeared in all 11 of Southampton’s Championship fixtures this season, contributing with two assists.
Yet, his performances have left fans divided. While he excelled at Swansea in the past, he has had some underwhelming displays for the inconsistent Southampton team this time around. However, Manning recently started for the Republic of Ireland in their 4-0 victory over Gibraltar, playing the full 90 minutes after featuring in the second half of the previous friendly against Greece.
Gary Connaughton, a journalist for the Irish publication Balls.ie, rated Manning at 8/10 and noted, “Making his first competitive start in almost three years, Manning looked proficient when in possession, even when not under pressure. He had several opportunities to deliver set-piece crosses, with varying degrees of success.”
“As the game progressed, he seemed to control the pace of play in the second half. The Galway native appears comfortable with the ball, a quality that has sometimes been lacking in Ireland’s defensive positions.”
Manning’s performances have raised questions about whether he will ultimately thrive at Southampton. He was outstanding in the second tier of football last season, registering impressive numbers with 10 assists and five goals, which is likely why Southampton brought him on board.
The reasons behind his less impressive statistics at Southampton are challenging to pinpoint. While he continues to work under the same manager, Russell Martin, it’s worth acknowledging that Martin has encountered difficulties thus far. It is possible that Manning will shine once Southampton fully hits their stride, assuming they do so under Martin’s leadership. However, at the moment, it’s a challenging period for Manning and his former Swansea manager.
Southampton will return to action this weekend against Hull City.
