The former Celtic defender, who also had a loan spell at St Johnstone during his time in Scotland, has decided to retire from professional football at the age of 29. His retirement is a result of a persistent knee injury that, despite his best efforts, has prevented him from making a full recovery. Darnell Fisher also had stints with Rotherham United, Preston North End, and Middlesbrough, with his final professional game taking place at the Riverside Stadium.
In an Instagram post, Fisher expressed his decision, stating, “The time has come to hang up my boots due to my knee injury. I’ve done everything possible to regain full fitness, but it wasn’t meant to be. I want to express my gratitude to my teammates, the clubs I’ve played for, and the fans who supported me throughout the years.”
Scott Brown, the renowned Celtic captain who had recently left Fleetwood Town, responded to Fisher’s post with a message of encouragement, saying, “All the best in the future, my man. Stay positive.”
Several other former teammates and football figures, including Joe Ledley, Mikael Lustig, and Scott Sinclair from Celtic, as well as Josh Ginnelly, who now plays in the English Championship with Swansea City, left supportive comments on Fisher’s post, expressing their best wishes for his future endeavors.
