BREAKING NEWS : Cincinnati Reds Make Shocking Move to Send Struggling All-Star to Triple-A

The Reds have called up promising pitching prospect Luis Mey while demoting Alexis Diaz. On Thursday, the Cincinnati Reds made a number of significant roster moves, including promoting top pitching prospect Luis Mey and demoting All-Star reliever Alex Diaz. MLB Pipeline ranks Mey, 23, as the No. 20 prospect in the organization. With a triple-digit heater, he is 1-1 with a 4.00 ERA in 10 games for Triple-A Louisville this season. He’s struck out 10 in nine innings, but he’s also walked seven, so his control is a question mark at this point.

According to Francys Romero, Mey leads Triple-A with 45 pitches at 100 mph or higher.

Diaz’s demotion is a significant step, considering he was an All-Star in 2023. Alexis Diaz, the brother of New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz, with a lifetime record of 18-14 and a 3.21 ERA. He made his debut in 2022, pitching to a 1.84 ERA over 59 games. He performed admirably in 2023, making the All-Star Game and saving 37 games (3.07 ERA). He was still solid in 2024, pitching to a 3.99 ERA in 60 games (28 saves), but he’s struggled this season.

Reds closer Diaz selected for All-Star Game

He started the season on the disabled list and has an ERA of 12.00 after only six games. He will return to Louisville to work on modifications. The Reds begin play on Thursday at 16-15 overall and second in the National League Central. They’ll wrap up a series with the St. Louis Cardinals at 12:40 p.m. ET. Left-hander Andrew Abbott (CIN) will pitch against fellow lefty Matthew Liberatore (STL).
