Former Premier League striker Patrick Cutrone, who previously played for Wolves, is now seeking to rejuvenate his career in the Italian second division, having left Molineux to embark on a fresh start with Como 1907.
When Patrick Cutrone wore the iconic number nine jersey for AC Milan or secured a £16 million transfer to one of the Premier League’s most ambitious and upwardly-mobile teams in 2019, he probably didn’t envision preparing to face Catanzaro in Italy’s Serie B just four years later. Yet, this is the reality confronting a striker who has had to rebuild his career from the ground up, as his disappointing spell at Wolves severely damaged his once-promising reputation.
“After experiencing various loan spells, I needed peace of mind, particularly on a mental level,” explains Cutrone to Tuttomercatoweb, clarifying his decision to leave Wolverhampton Wanderers permanently when his hometown club Como came calling in the summer of 2022.
“I chose to leave but be happy. I had offers from top leagues, but I deliberately selected Como because I found a stable and enduring project here. It’s a decision I would make again. I’m genuinely content.”
Cutrone managed to score just three goals in 28 appearances for Wolves. The former Italy international also struggled to make an impact during loan spells at Fiorentina, Valencia, and Empoli. However, he is now hopeful for better days, as he tallied nine goals in his debut season with Como in 2022/23, and the team currently sits in sixth place, pushing for a spot in the playoffs.
“Those who had experience in Serie B had told me it’s a tough and highly physical league. I observed that myself as well. But, with the support of my teammates and the club, I integrated well right away,” adds Cutrone, who hails from Lombardy.
“Last year wasn’t bad, not even on a personal level. This year, we’ve had an even better start, so we need to continue. Like all forwards, I aim to score as many goals as possible. I have a personal goal tied to my growth, and I hope to achieve it. Nevertheless, what’s crucial is helping the team and working toward our common objective over time.”
So far this season, Cutrone has found the back of the net three times in nine Serie B appearances.
