Steve Parkin has clarified that Elliot Lee’s absence from the Sutton match was not an attempt to avoid a yellow card suspension for the upcoming Notts County game, but rather a decision to rest the playmaker, who seemed fatigued. Lee had started all 14 games in the League Two season but was placed on the bench for the Sutton game, primarily because he had already received four yellow cards, and one more would have made him ineligible for the crucial Notts County match. However, Parkin, the assistant manager, stated that the main reason for the rest was to prevent any potential injuries due to fatigue and keep Lee fresh for the weekend match.
Parkin explained, “The manager felt that Elliot had played every minute of every game practically and could do with a little breather. We thought he looked a little bit tired at Bradford, hence Jordan Davies coming in. It was more the fact that we were being a bit protective of him and maybe preventing any kind of injury, keeping him ready for the weekend. He is a sensible lad, and the four bookings thing never really factored into it.”
In the end, Lee was brought on as a substitute during the Sutton match, where he scored a remarkable winning goal in the 89th minute, increasing his season’s goal tally to nine. Wrexham, currently unbeaten in seven games across all competitions, has climbed to third place in the table. They are set to face Notts County, who are in second place. Although Notts County is just five points behind the top spot, Parkin emphasized the need to stay focused and not become complacent. He stated, “The key thing is just to keep in touch with everybody who is up there and make sure that you are not too far adrift at any stage of the season. It is nice to be right up there, but it is just one game at a time. I know it is an old cliche, but it has got to be that way. Looking at the league table at this time of year is a little bit dangerous. The most important thing for us is to make sure we apply ourselves at the weekend.”
