Bristol Rovers have terminated their contract with manager Joey Barton after his nearly three-year tenure, just two weeks before their scheduled match against Reading. The former England international, who has generated controversy in the past, guided the team to promotion from League Two in the 2021/22 season and secured a 17th-place finish in the previous campaign.
Despite hopes for a stronger start to the current season, the team, currently in 16th place, decided to part ways with Barton after 13 matches. His last game in charge resulted in a 1-1 draw with Stevenage on Tuesday, making him the fifth manager to be dismissed in the early months of the season.
Bristol Rovers will face Reading in Berkshire next month on November 7, as the original fixture was postponed due to international commitments. With 12 days remaining until the match, the club is expected to appoint a new manager for the midweek trip up the M4.
A statement from the club expressed gratitude to Joey Barton for his efforts and extended well wishes for his future. In the interim, Andy Mangan will take charge of the team, with support from Glenn Whelan, Danny Ventre, and Anssi Jaakkola, who will retain their positions.
