Journalist Alan Nixon says Bradford City will give Dean Holden the opportunity to replace Mark Hughes this week.
Since firing Hughes at the beginning of the month, the Bantams have been without a permanent manager. Instead, midfielder Kevin McDonald has been in charge of the squad in an acting capacity. Before their form started to deteriorate once more, the 34-year-old seemed to somewhat right the ship by winning three straight events across all categories.
After a 1-1 draw with League Two championship rivals Wrexham, MK Dons was thrashed 4-1. The Yorkshire team then lost shockingly to Sutton United, a team in the basement, yesterday in what may have been McDonald’s final game as interim manager Earlier this week, it was revealed that former Charlton Athletic manager Holden.
Earlier this week, it was claimed that Holden, the former manager of Charlton Athletic, was one of the applicants mentioned to take over at Valley Parade following his departure from the Addicks in August. The 44-year-old now appears to be headed for a drop to League Two, a division he has never managed previously.
According to Nixon, Bradford might make the employment offer to the former defender from Oldham Athletic and Peterborough United this week, but Gillingham, a league rival, is also interested. After unexpectedly firing Neil Harris earlier this week, the Gills are now searching for a new manager and may possibly consider former Newcastle United and Aston Villa coach Stephen Clemence.
Holden would always be a desirable choice for teams in in League Two, and Bradford is prepared to take the risk in order to deter potential suitors. In addition to Gillingham, Grimsby Town is also seeking a new manager, and it would be prudent to decide before taking their possibilities into account.
Although there was no rush to select Hughes’ replacement, given their recent bad performance, it appears that this is the appropriate time to make the move. Despite starting the season as one of the favorites to get promoted, they are currently ranked sixteenth. Still, there is still plenty of time for them to catch up, as they trail just seventh-place Accrington Stanley by six points.
