Reading midfielder has officially declared his retirement from the world of professional soccer at the age of 33.

Former Reading midfielder Danny Drinkwater has officially declared his retirement from the world of professional soccer at the age of 33. The central midfielder concluded his active career in Berkshire, making 34 appearances during the 2021/22 season while on loan from Chelsea.

A graduate of the Manchester United Academy, Drinkwater rose to prominence during a six-year tenure with Leicester City. He joined the Foxes just before their Championship title victory a decade ago and departed as a Premier League champion, following the remarkable achievement of Claudio Ranieri’s team in winning the title.

After a £35 million move to Chelsea, the English international made 23 appearances over five years at Stamford Bridge, with several loan stints elsewhere. In a conversation with Jake Humphrey on his High-Performance Podcast, Drinkwater expressed, “I would like to formally announce my retirement from professional football. It has probably been a long time coming, maybe. I think it is time to make it official now.”

Despite his efforts, Drinkwater was unsuccessful in securing a new club after parting ways with Reading over a year ago.
