Wolves’ captain, Max Kilman, has taken to social media to share his thoughts following yesterday’s frustrating 2-1 loss to Sheffield United. This defeat marks the end of Wanderers’ previously unblemished streak in the Premier League and was marred by a highly controversial incident.
In this match, Wolves conceded a 100th-minute penalty to Sheffield United, with Fabio Silva being deemed responsible for a foul on George Baldock. The penalty decision, initially made by referee Robert Jones, was upheld by VAR’s Chris Kavanagh. However, replays clearly indicated that Baldock was already falling before any contact from Silva.
Prominent football figure Gary Lineker decried it as a “terrible decision,” and Match of the Day analysts Martin Keown and Danny Murphy also voiced their disagreement with the call.
Many Wolves fans are increasingly frustrated by these decisions seemingly going against their team, potentially costing them valuable points.
Even the typically composed and reserved Wolves captain, Max Kilman, expressed his frustration via an Instagram Story message, stating, “Today wasn’t our day. It’s tough to accept the decisions going against us. Thanks to our dedicated fans for their support. We’ll regroup and continue.”
This penalty controversy is the fourth such incident Wolves have faced this season. In their opening game against Manchester United, they were denied a penalty for a clear foul on Sasa Kalajdzic by Andre Onana. They were also penalized for a contentious handball by Joao Gomes at Luton Town, which, while legally correct, was widely seen as absurd. Moreover, in the previous game against Newcastle United, another penalty was awarded for a similar foul to the one involving Silva in the Sheffield United match.
Kilman’s acknowledgment of officiating errors is shared by his teammate Nelson Semedo and manager Gary O’Neil. It’s undoubtedly frustrating for the players, who put in hard work during the week to prepare for matches only to have results influenced by controversial decisions. These incidents, if avoided, could have earned Wolves an additional six points, which is a significant difference in the context of their season.
Nonetheless, the team recognizes the need to improve and put themselves in positions where such decisions won’t have as significant an impact on their results, as emphasized by O’Neil.
