Former Rams running back Cam Akers, who was traded to the Minnesota Vikings in late September 2022, is feared to have torn his left Achilles tendon during a game against the Atlanta Falcons. Akers had previously torn his right Achilles in training camp in 2021 but made a remarkable recovery to join the Rams in their playoff run and Super Bowl victory. He became one of the first prominent NFL players to undergo the SpeedBridge surgical procedure, which allowed him to return to action in about six months, much faster than the typical recovery timeline of nine to twelve months for Achilles injuries.
Akers had started to carve out a role in the Minnesota offense, with at least eight carries in each of the last three games and 138 total yards and a touchdown since joining the team. This injury would mark his second Achilles tear in his short NFL career, but this time, it’s his left Achilles. The Rams had traded Akers to the Vikings, citing a “philosophical difference” with head coach Sean McVay regarding the player’s role on the team.
In addition to Akers, the Vikings also lost their starting quarterback Kirk Cousins to an Achilles tear the previous week and acquired Josh Dobbs from the Arizona Cardinals as Cousins’ replacement for the rest of the season. While Akers was behind the current Vikings starter Alexander Mattison, Rams fans continue to appreciate his contributions to the franchise and their Super Bowl season and wish him the best in his recovery.
