Villarreal is reportedly eyeing a move for Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Gonçalo Guedes in the upcoming winter transfer market, as per information from Radio Marca, as relayed by Estadio Deportivo. The winger, who joined Wolves in 2022, faced initial struggles and was loaned to Benfica in January. His loan was extended in the last transfer window.
Villarreal, having won three league games and changed managers twice this season, recently appointed Marcelino García Toral as their new coach. In preparation for the winter market, the club is said to be planning a significant move to acquire Guedes, who is currently owned by Wolves.
Guedes, during his time at Benfica this season, has seen limited action, clocking in at 159 minutes across seven games, primarily due to his recovery from a knee injury. The 26-year-old is reportedly seeking an exit, and Villarreal is ready to facilitate his move. The La Liga side intends to bring Guedes in on loan and cover his wages. Marcelino, familiar with Guedes from their time together at Valencia, has given his approval for the signing, and the player is said to welcome a return to La Liga.
The report does not specify Wolves’ stance on the potential early termination of Guedes’ loan at Benfica and subsequent loan move to Villarreal. Contrary reports from Portugal this week suggest that Guedes is expected to remain with Benfica for the entire season.
