Newcastle Council ‘disappointed’ Super League’s Magic Weekend will not return to the city next year

The Magic Weekend, a prominent event in the Super League, is set to take place at Elland Road in Leeds in 2024, deviating from its traditional location in Newcastle. Despite Newcastle City Council expressing disappointment at the event not returning to its city next year, officials remain optimistic about hosting it again in the future. St James’ Park in Newcastle had been the venue for the Magic Weekend seven times since 2015, with brief stints at Anfield in Liverpool in 2019.

Scheduled for August 17 and August 18, 2024, during the Premier League season, the Magic Weekend at Elland Road will feature all six fixtures broadcast on Sky Sports, following a recently announced three-year broadcast deal. Coun Alex Hay, Cabinet member for a Thriving City at Newcastle City Council, expressed disappointment about the event moving away but emphasized the city’s pride in hosting the rugby league event over the past three years. Despite the

change in venue, there is confidence that Newcastle will host the Magic Weekend again in the future. Elland Road in Leeds becomes the sixth venue for the Magic Weekend since its inception in 2007.
