Leeds United’s January transfer plans revealed

Leeds United is reportedly not anticipating significant activity in the upcoming January transfer window, according to information from The Athletic. The club is currently focused on maintaining squad stability, with the view that most positions are adequately covered by at least two players.

The team, led by manager Daniel Farke, is aiming for promotion back to the Premier League and has shown positive form coming out of the November international break. The general sentiment is that there’s little need to make substantial changes during the winter transfer window, given the healthy size and performance of the first team.

However, potential departures, such as Wilfried Gnonto, could impact the transfer plans. Lazio is reportedly interested in the 20-year-old winger, with discussions involving a loan deal and a €15 million (£13.1 million) option to buy clause. If Gnonto leaves, it may prompt Leeds United to consider bringing in a new player to maintain the squad’s depth.

Leeds United is currently third in the Championship table after 16 games, aiming to secure promotion. While Ipswich Town and Leicester City hold the top two automatic promotion places, the competition is fierce, with several teams closely trailing Leeds in the standings.

The report suggests that Leeds United might not actively pursue signings in January unless a compelling opportunity arises. The challenging nature of the January transfer market for finding good value is acknowledged. The potential sale of Gnonto could alter the situation, but it’s noted that Leeds is unlikely to accept the £13.1 million option to buy loan offer from Lazio, considering the figures they rejected in the previous summer transfer window.
