JUST IN : Detroit Lions Officially Designated Rookie Quarterback to Return

On Wednesday, the Detroit Lions took steps to enhance their quarterback lineup by activating quarterback Hendon Hooker, as reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Hooker, who was chosen by the Lions in the third round of the 2023 NFL draft, is returning after recovering from a torn ACL suffered last November while playing for Tennessee. This injury led to him starting the season on the NFI (Non-Football Injury) list. The team has now initiated a 21-day practice window, during which they can decide to include Hooker on the active roster.

Hendon Hooker, the 68th overall pick by the Lions in the 2023 NFL draft, demonstrated his prowess during his final two college seasons with the Tennessee Volunteers. Standing at six-foot-four, he threw an impressive 58 touchdowns with just five interceptions during that period, completing 69% of his passes. His performance earned him Heisman Trophy Award votes in 2022, despite his season-ending injury in November against the South Carolina Gamecocks.

In terms of the Lions’ quarterback depth chart, Hooker is slated to be behind Jared Goff and Teddy Bridgewater. Bridgewater, who signed a one-year, $3 million contract with the team in August, is expected to be the primary backup. Goff, a Pro Bowler in 2022, has been performing well and is considered one of the top quarterbacks in the NFC, accumulating 3,075 yards, 18 touchdowns, and eight interceptions in 11 games. Hooker is positioned to move up the depth chart should Goff or Bridgewater face any setbacks.

It’s noteworthy that Goff joined the Lions in 2021 after spending five seasons with the Los Angeles Rams. Hooker’s activation adds depth and potential options for the Lions, offering insurance in case of any quarterback injuries or performance issues.
