We’ve assessed certain Charlton Athletic players who face the prospect of being transferred in January. Some players at Charlton Athletic have had less-than-stellar performances, and they must improve before the upcoming January transfer window.
Charlton has experienced a turbulent season, culminating in the dismissal of Dean Holden in late August following a 2-1 defeat to Oxford United, marking their fourth consecutive loss. Jason Pearce temporarily took charge for one game, securing a victory against Fleetwood Town, before Michael Appleton was appointed in early September.
Since Appleton’s arrival, the team’s form has improved, with only two league losses, placing them in 10th position. However, to sustain this positive momentum and make a playoff push, Appleton requires consistent performances from the entire squad; otherwise, he may consider selling some players in January.
One player facing uncertainty is Charlie Kirk. Despite a busy transfer window under Holden, Kirk’s early-season performances were underwhelming. Although initially benched after Holden’s departure, Kirk has seen limited action under Appleton, making only a seven-minute appearance in League One against Wigan Athletic and receiving an hour in the FA Cup tie against non-league Cray Valley Paper Mills. Appleton expressed disappointment with Kirk’s performances and suggested that a fresh start might be necessary for the winger.
Another player in question is Conor McGrandles, who joined Charlton in 2022 but struggled to make an impact. Sent on loan to Cambridge United in early 2023, McGrandles spent the initial league games under Holden on the bench or out of the squad entirely. However, he has recently returned to contention, featuring in the FA Cup and earning brief appearances in league matches against Portsmouth, with two consecutive starts. McGrandles needs to maintain his performance levels to convince Appleton of his reliability and secure his future at Charlton.
