Newly crowned World Rugby Player of the Year, Ardie Savea, is embarking on a distinctive journey with a one-season contract with Japan’s Kobe Steelers. Expressing his desire to explore new challenges, the All Blacks loose forward has opted for the Japanese league known for its significant investments.
Savea’s move to Kobe on a short-term deal ensures he won’t miss any national team games. Joining forces with fellow New Zealand teammate Brodie Retallick at Kobe, Savea conveyed his excitement for the Japan Rugby League One opener on December 9.
Savea, aged 30, cited the positive feedback from players entering the country for the competition, noting the allure of testing oneself in a league with exceptional talent across all teams.
This shift is part of a trend, with several All Blacks, including captain Sam Cane, fly-half Richie Mo’unga, and full-back Beauden Barrett, relocating to Japan ahead of the upcoming season. The league also features players from the South Africa team that triumphed over New Zealand in the World Cup final in October.
Kobe, having finished ninth in the previous season, aims for an improved performance this time. Savea expressed his commitment to the challenge, aspiring to contribute to the culture and success of Kobe Steelers.
Brodie Retallick, returning for his second stint at Kobe, has been named co-captain and praised Savea as an influential figure, expressing his delight at being joined by someone he considers an inspiration to many Kiwis and people worldwide.
