Sky Sports F1 pundit Martin Brundle has characterized the 2023 season for Mercedes and Ferrari as a “rollercoaster of elation and disappointment.” Mercedes secured second place in the constructors’ championship, narrowly fending off Ferrari, who fiercely contested the position but ultimately fell three points short after a tense battle in Abu Dhabi.
Despite clinching the runners-up spot, Mercedes expressed dissatisfaction with their inconsistent performances throughout the season. Ferrari, on the other hand, faced challenges with strategic and reliability issues. George Russell secured a podium finish in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, while his teammate Lewis Hamilton finished ninth, underscoring the unpredictable nature of the Mercedes team.
Brundle, a former F1 driver, described the seasons of both Mercedes and Ferrari as a “rollercoaster,” recognizing the razor-edge precision required in operating Formula 1 cars. He emphasized the challenges faced by almost all teams and drivers, excluding three-time world champion Max Verstappen.
Brundle commented on the intriguing championship battle between Ferrari and Mercedes, acknowledging the highs and lows experienced by both teams and their drivers throughout the season. He pointed out the delicate nature of the latest F1 cars’ aerodynamics and the sensitivity of tires to various factors, leading to variable race results for almost every driver.
Mercedes openly acknowledged the challenges encountered in the 2023 season, with Lewis Hamilton expressing his dissatisfaction with the overall performance. Hamilton highlighted concerns about Red Bull’s dominance despite not developing their car since August. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff characterized the season’s performance as “miserable,” stating that the car did not deserve a victory and emphasizing the need for better development in the upcoming year.
