Kieron Dyer has shared his perspective on the calls for West Ham United to sack manager David Moyes, expressing his confusion over the demand for change at the London Stadium. Despite currently sitting ninth in the Premier League, qualifying for the Europa League knockout stages, and enjoying an unbeaten streak in their last five matches across all competitions, some sections of the fanbase are advocating for a new, more progressive coach to maximize attacking talent. However, Dyer believes Moyes is doing an exceptional job and should continue in his role.
During a talk on talkSPORT, Dyer stated, “I don’t get it. Like you said, he’s won a trophy, they obviously sold their best player in the summer, they’re doing extremely well. They’re not too far out of the European places, they’re still in Europe. He’s doing a fantastic job.”
There’s always a risk in football that one may not fully appreciate a manager’s contribution until they are gone, and West Ham could face that dilemma if Moyes were to leave the London Stadium at the end of the season. Moyes’ current contract concludes at the end of the campaign, and discussions about an extension are yet to take place. Given Moyes’ past success and the impressive start to the season in all competitions, there seems to be a compelling case for prolonging his tenure.
While some may wish for more exciting football that brings out the best in players like Mohammed Kudus and Jarrod Bowen, the key question is whether the style of play matters when the results are securing European qualification and potential title wins.
It’s important to note that West Ham lost Declan Rice this summer, a player around whom Moyes had built much of his squad. Despite this significant loss, the team has remained competitive, and Moyes deserves credit for his achievements in East London. Dyer finds the suggestions of sacking Moyes baffling, and given the team’s performance, it appears the manager should be retained.
