Newcastle United is facing a mixed scenario on the injury front as they approach the festive season. Unfortunately, Nick Pope is set to be absent until at least the latter part of the season due to a dislocated shoulder sustained in the recent 1-0 victory over Manchester United. The decision has been made for the goalkeeper to undergo surgery, with no definitive timeline for his return. While the average recovery period for such procedures is around four months, Pope’s role as a goalkeeper, with the additional strain on his shoulder, suggests a potentially longer absence. Martin Dubravka is expected to fill in during Pope’s recovery.
Two other Newcastle players have already undergone surgery this season. Jacob Murphy underwent an operation for a dislocated shoulder, and Matt Targett had surgery for a hamstring issue.
On a more positive note, Sven Botman, who has been dealing with a knee problem since September, appears to be progressing well. The 23-year-old defender, who had been considering surgery, shared an encouraging update on his injury status. Botman recently engaged in light training individually and posted an image on Instagram celebrating his last goal for Newcastle against Sheffield United, signaling his imminent return from injury with the caption “Last few steps.” In Botman’s absence, Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles has effectively stepped into the team. Additionally, the club is optimistic about the returns of Sean Longstaff and Joe Willock, who are nearing comebacks from ankle and Achilles injuries, respectively.
