The Mets expanded their outfield choices by inking Taylor Kohlwey to a minor league deal with an invitation to major league spring training, as confirmed by the club on Friday.
In the previous season, Kohlwey delivered a strong performance in the Padres’ minor league system, boasting a .276/.390/.437 slash line with 12 home runs and 15 stolen bases.
Having made his debut in July, Kohlwey participated in five major league games before being sent down. Mets’ President of Baseball Operations, David Stearns, made the move to sign the 29-year-old Kohlwey to bolster the team’s outfield depth.
A versatile player who covered all three outfield positions last year, Kohlwey had been part of the Padres since his draft in 2016. He is anticipated to serve as additional support for the Mets’ outfield, currently featuring five members on the 40-man roster: Brandon Nimmo, Starling Marte, DJ Stewart, Alex Ramirez, and Cooper Hummel.
