Newcastle United have been linked with a move for Roma manager as Eddie Howe’s replacement

Newcastle United is reportedly considering Jose Mourinho as a potential manager amid discussions about Eddie Howe’s future. Despite Howe’s success in transforming the team into a Champions League contender, there are suggestions that Newcastle might seek a manager with more European experience and accustomed to handling a squad of superstars, aligning with the club’s ambitions under the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund.

Eddie Howe, who led Newcastle to a top-four finish last season, faces the challenge of managing European and domestic competitions, unfamiliar territory for much of his career. While injuries have impacted performance, the owners are seemingly seeking more from their manager.

Recent reports from Italy indicate that Newcastle is one of the clubs interested in Mourinho, who is currently in talks with Roma over a new contract. Mourinho, with a track record of winning trophies in various leagues, has significant Premier League experience. However, journalist Dean Jones suggests that talk of Mourinho’s potential move to Newcastle is premature. PIF admires Mourinho, but there is currently no indication of immediate progress in this direction. Jones acknowledges the allure of a high-profile manager like Mourinho for a club with wealth and ambition.

Regarding Howe’s future, former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan speculates that PIF might grow frustrated if Newcastle fails to maintain progress over the next few years, potentially leading to Howe’s departure. Currently in the Europa League spots, the Magpies’ Champions League aspirations, dangled by Howe last season, could be in jeopardy. Some argue that Howe might have taken on too much too soon, and the team’s performance toward the end of the season will be crucial in determining their future trajectory.
