‘Big part of my motivation’: TJ Perenara eager for All Blacks return

After enduring a challenging period on the sidelines due to an Achilles injury, seasoned halfback TJ Perenara, with 80 Test caps to his name, is setting his sights on a comeback to the pinnacle of rugby with the All Blacks under the leadership of new coach Scott Robertson. The 31-year-old missed the entire Super Rugby Pacific season with the Hurricanes this year after rupturing his Achilles during national duty with the All Blacks over a year ago.

Perenara faced a potentially career-ending injury at England’s Twickenham Stadium, with time running out on the game clock. However, he remains determined to return to the international stage. Recently re-signing with the Hurricanes and New Zealand Rugby for an additional two years, the Rugby World Cup winner expressed his desire to don the black jersey once again.

Speaking to reporters, Perenara emphasized the intrinsic motivation of playing the game in New Zealand—to become an All Black and compete at the highest level, representing the team he grew up supporting. He sees wearing the black jersey as the pinnacle of the sport and a driving force behind his dedication.

During Perenara’s absence, emerging talent Cam Roigard stepped up for the Hurricanes, earning a debut with the All Blacks. Roigard, at 23, is considered a strong contender to retain the No. 9 jersey for the Hurricanes, potentially posing a challenge to Perenara’s aspirations. However, there exists the prospect of a formidable partnership between the two in 2024.

With veteran scrumhalves Aaron Smith and Brad Weber departing New Zealand, an opportunity arises for Perenara and Roigard to make their case for All Blacks selection next year. Perenara outlined his short-term goal of returning to full team training, acknowledging that playing quality rugby, making an impact on the field, and contributing to team success are essential elements for earning a spot in the prestigious All Blacks squad.
