With new owners, a new manager, and new players arriving, this summer has to go down as one of the most tumultuous in Leeds United’s history.
Relegation to the Championship triggered a major exodus from the club, and the team appeared to alter on a weekly basis throughout the transfer window.
This pattern maintained even after Daniel Farke took over as manager of the first team.
Things have just lately calmed down, and the German now has three months to build some type of continuity in the first squad.
Leeds are currently 15th in the table, nine points behind table-topping Leicester City, and Farke will want to see an improvement in results before the January transfer market opens.
Illan Meslier is one player who was anticipated to leave the club over the summer but did not, and the young goalkeeper has explained why.
“It was difficult to leave when the club was failing because I felt guilty on the inside,” he explained on the official Leeds United podcast.
“I played in the majority of the games, and the results were not favorable.” It was not in my best interests to quit a club in the second tier. To go and play elsewhere and see Leeds in the middle of the second division and think, ‘oh no’. For me, I needed to stay and do my best to keep Leeds in the top two.”
Though Meslier has started the most of the games for the Yorkshire-based club this season, summer signing Karl Darlow is unlikely to be content with being held out of the first-team starting XI for much longer.
Competition for positions is the type of challenge that managers claim to embrace, but Farke can deal with it another day.
