Charlton chief unwilling to discuss transfer window move for Plymouth defender

Charlton head coach Michael Appleton was cautious in discussing the potential acquisition of Plymouth Argyle defender Macaulay Gillesphey by the club. The 28-year-old left-sided center-back was present at The Valley to witness Charlton’s League One match against Oxford United, which unfortunately resulted in a 2-1 defeat.

Gillesphey played a significant role in Plymouth’s promotion last season, featuring in 35 League One matches. His football journey started in Newcastle United’s academy, followed by a stint at Carlisle United after his release. He later made a free transfer move to Brisbane Roar before returning to the UK to sign with Plymouth in July 2021.

 

Appleton, when questioned about Gillesphey, remained reserved in his response, stating, “Well until it is done, I don’t want to say too much.” He emphasized the uncertainty in football dealings and stressed the need for official confirmation before making detailed comments. Appleton expressed the ongoing focus on players who could potentially impact the starting eleven, acknowledging the challenges in completing such transactions.

He added, “You never say never in this game, but until someone actually tells me that it is finally done and dusted, then I don’t really want to comment too much.” Despite the complexities, Appleton reassured the fans of the club’s proactive approach, stating, “But it won’t be for the want of being aggressive, being on the front foot and trying to make things happen.”
